A beginner’s guide to meditation
My minds too busy, it won’t go quiet, I’m uncomfortable, I’m not doing it right are just a few of the things that used to run through my mind when meditation was offered.
One day I saw a Tibetan monk on social media talking about meditation. ‘Mediation easy’ he said ‘give monkey brain something to do. Money brain watch breath!’.’There, you meditating!" Found this liberating. Whenever my mind would wander I would gently bring my awareness back to my breath and simply “I breathe in, I breathe out’
Studies have shown that you only need to find 14 minutes a day to find benefit but I think even smaller times are beneficial. If you can find the time to meditate longer that’s great - I like plugging into a Jo Dispenses meditation and get a lot of value from that too.
I think the main thing is that meditation is different for everyone. For some it’s a moving meditation going out for a run or going to a movement practice like yoga. For others it may be gardening or craftwork. The really important thing is to take time for yourself.
